Temporary Works Design

Our chartered engineers draw on their expertise in buildability, safety and cutting-edge construction techniques, adding value to projects by conserving materials and decreasing build programmes.

What we do

Across the fields of Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering, we can provide temporary works designs for a wide range of applications. We challenge briefs, assumptions and “the norm” to ensure our client’s temporary works costs are minimised as much as possible.

What we did

Slope Stability Assessments

Meon Vale, Stratford

Highway Authority approved slope stability assessment for a road widening scheme. Design of ground investigation, specification of geotechnical in-situ and laboratory testing and analysis of embankment stability using proprietary software.

Dursley, Gloucestershire

Slope stability assessment for proposed housing development adjacent to river and valley side with a history of slope instability. Design of ground investigation, specification of geotechnical in-situ and laboratory testing and analysis of embankment stability using proprietary software.

Longbridge, Birmingham

Slope stability analysis for an existing temporary slope where a CFA piling operation was proposed along the crest. Analysis undertaken using historical

GI, derivation of characteristic soil parameters and proprietary software.

Stoke-on-Trent

Slope stability analysis for a proposed excavation of former gas holders as part of a remediation scheme to redevelop a brownfield site. The gas holders were up to 6m deep. Analysis undertaken using historical GI, derivation of characteristic soil parameters and proprietary software.

Butterfield Business Park, Luton

Assessment of the adequacy of a cast in-situ concrete slab at first floor level in an office adjoining a warehouse to carry MEWP loads arising from construction activities.

Superstructure Propping

Experienced in designing propping for all forms of construction to undertake remedial works, facilitate complicated elements of construction, or make unstable structures safe. Working closely with contractors and specialist sub- contractors, we put buildability at the forefront to ensure our solutions are appropriate and as simple as possible. Often done in conjunction with a Rodgers Leask Structural Survey.

Working Platform Designs & Specifications

Providing support for many different types of plant, including piling rigs, traveling cranes, crane outriggers, haul road
traffic and lightweight vehicles. Tackling demanding sites with diverse constraints, including peat, landfill, culverts, Network Rail and existing attenuation tanks.

Dysart Road, Grantham

Piling mat, residential site.

Field Lane, Scalby

Piling mat, residential site.

London Gateway Unit 3020D

Piling mat, crane outrigger support, industrial & logistics site.

Southend Business Park, Essex

Crane outriggers, industrial & logistic site.

Burgess Hill, West Sussex

Piling mat, crane outrigger support & haul road.

Harrow Lane, West Sussex

Piling mat, crane outrigger support, haul road, car parks, site storage areas.

Market Hall, Derby

Having completed full Structural engineering designs for the Grade II listed, £35M refurbishment project, Rodgers Leask provided temporary works support to the Wates Construction:

  • –  Designs for formwork to support existing masonry arches during repairs and to support new arches during construction,
  • –  Sketch options and advice on the support of floors and masonry to facilitate demolition and reconstruction,
  • –  Sketch options and advice for temporary works to support plant during demolition of reinforced concrete staircases,
  • –  Verification of design and installation of scaffolding by others.

Derby Venue, Derby

Working with the main contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland, our input has provided valuable assistance in unlocking key constraints for the flagship city centre development:

  • –  Design of temporary supports
to facilitate partial demolition and reconstruction of an existing brickwork building,
  • –  Checking capacity of new roof structure and concrete terracing to support birds nest scaffolding,
  • –  Design of temporary covers to floor ducts to support large scissor lifts,
  • –  Verification of design and installation of scaffolding by others.

Ashton Canal, Manchester

Temporary shoring to facilitate the demolition of sections of a canal-side retaining wall, removal of coping and brickwork courses. A steel framework was designed, along with aluminium lattice trusses acting as lintels to span voids at the base of the wall.

Utilita Arena, Birmingham

Load check of proposed temporary forces on existing concrete / steel hybrid structural frame during The Commonwealth Games, including rigging loads, food & beverage outlets and the media centre. Load check for proposed crane outriggers on external yard spanning over Network Rail tunnel during mechanical plant installation. Various additional checks for events including floor loads on arena slab spanning over Network Rail tunnel, and rigging loads hanging from the space frame roof.

Residential Temporary Works Packs

Designs provided for a number of national housebuilders including temporary signage and totems, hoarding and fencing, silo bases, site cabin bases, scaffold bases, site storage racks and interim masonry support.

BS5975 Category 3 Design Checks

Our engineers are fully conversant in the process of BS5975 Category 3 design checks, and have undertaken a number
of such checks. Checks include both Structural and Geo-Environmental designs for temporary structures.
