What we did

Civil engineering

We provided extensive support to the client throughout the project from the planning stage through to construction. A drainage strategy was developed to accompany the Reserved Matters application and an earthworks strategy produced that minimized the
import and export of material.

We liaised with the Environmental Agency to renew a bespoke Flood Risk Activity Permit that allowed the contractor to construct a 750m long, 40m wide flood compensation corridor directly adjacent to the River Derwent to tie in to the wider Derby City Council ‘Our City Our River’ flood defence works.

Our Civil Engineering team also designed the internal primary infrastructure to serve the development.

Structural engineering

We undertook the design of the steel frame and foundation bases up to tender stage. We then worked closely with the steel fabricator to bring the designs to construction stage ensuring that the frame design was fully co-ordinated with the final foundation design.

Geo-Environmental engineering

Whilst there was a historic site investigation, we were asked at short notice to facilitate and manage further intrusive investigations on site to supplement the original report. This additional investigation proved to be extremely important and formed a huge base on which the innovative foundation solution for the scheme was formed.

A piled foundation solution had been recommended previously by another consultant, but we challenged this to drive a more innovative and cost effective foundation solution that combats the complex ground conditions.

Adding value

The earthworks strategy and the innovative dynamic replacement foundation solution, which had never been used on a similar scheme in the UK before, were both instrumental aspects of the design that provided significant costs savings to the client.
