Rodgers Leask Ltd provided Civil and Structural engineering services for the new £3.7 million John Lewis southern distribution centre.

A tight programme of 29 weeks was imposed in order to meet the store opening date and allow the tenant fit-out to be carried out. The building consists of 6,615 sq m of warehouse space and 1,256 sq m of office accommodation on two floors.

As part of a JLP corporate sustainability strategy, the building was designed to meet a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’. The structure comprised of a 2 span portal frame with hit and miss columns along the central valley.

The floor was design for a mixture of free and defined movement areas within the structure supported on a piled slab solution. Precast concrete dock leveller walls and associated shelters were provided along the yard face whilst the end of the structure provided administration offices and employee welfare facilities.

External car park areas and concrete yard areas were provided draining into a new purpose sized balancing pond.
