Derby Market Hall update

14.02.22

We are delighted to be involved with the ongoing transformation of the Market Hall in Derby, appointed by Wates Group on behalf of Derby City Council

Along with Rodgers Leask providing structural engineering and civil engineering design input to the project, our Andy Leask has also taken a keen interest in the reconstruction of the finials

Andy commented: ‘The reconstruction of the Derby Market Hall finials was carried out by Frank Worthington, a Derby steel fabricator, with assistance from myself.

The finials arrived at the workshop as badly damaged mangled pieces and with no instruction manual!

The base section is made of zinc, with all other parts being thin copper sheet.

Frank excelled at the the laborious process of straightening all of the individual parts, but the flanges where they were attached to the base and the top were too weak to resist the wind load in the exposed place on the roof of the Market Hall.

He made dozens of small brackets and straps from brass and stainless steel to overcome the weaknesses.

I designed a timber base onto which the finials were assembled, transported and lifted into place.

The parts were then primed and reassembled with bolts and rivets before being returned to site for the final coat of paint.’
