Direct from our directors: Kully Toor
09.09.24
Recently, we’ve been doing the rounds with our directors, helping you to get to know the people leading our business even more than you already do. First, we spoke to Kully Toor, director of structures, about his career, the industry and a few things outside of work.
Kully joined us in 1997 upon graduation and worked his way up the business before being appointed director in 2018 – now overseeing a team of experienced structural engineers and technicians across our offices. Having worked on innovative and high value projects in many sectors, Kully is committed to providing cost effective and practical engineering solutions.
Why did you choose a career in engineering?
From a young age I enjoyed solving problems. My A levels – maths, physics, design and tech – enticed me into engineering. I can definitely say this career has given me a lot of complex challenges to solve, which is always immensely rewarding when you do find the right solution.
What are you most proud of in your career to date?
Running a business with like-minded colleagues. I have been with the company since I graduated, which means I’ve gotten to know my colleagues very well. Never underestimate the advantages of having a strong team around you. My job is much easier because I know I have smart, driven people who I can depend on.
What has been the biggest challenge of your career to date?
Inevitably, there have been several challenges. We’ve had difficult situations like the pandemic, Brexit and companies folding since I have been involved in leading the business. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when facing back-to-back problems and issues. But Rodgers Leask and the industry as whole are resilient. Slowly but surely, we’re seeing a bounce back for everyone.
What single piece of advice would you give to someone starting out in your profession?
Always ask questions. Don’t be shy even if it’s the simplest or stupidest question. It’s the only way they will learn. In engineering there are a lot of solutions to a problem, but getting the correct solution for everyone is the difficult part.
What’s your favourite book, film or album?
The Usual Suspects – seen it many times and will continue to do so.
Who do you most admire in the engineering industry?
The founders of Rodgers Leask – John Rodgers and Andy Leask. They are one of the reasons why I’ve stayed for over 25 years. Both were totally different characters who mentored me during my journey at this consultancy and I believe their differing, but complimentary, characters are the reasons why Rodgers Leask has been successful.
Is there anything you wished you knew at the start of your career?
Yes, I didn’t realise I was scared of heights until my first week! I found myself climbing up a six storey building from an external scaffold. I would encourage prospective engineers to double check if they have that phobia long before they are 65 feet in the air.
What makes a good engineer?
Good communication, good at problem solving and, most importantly, common sense.
What do you do in your spare time?
Spending time with family and friends, socialising and going to the gym. I enjoy being around people, which makes sense given the industry I’m in. It’s all about talking to different groups to solve a problem.
What three items are you taking to a deserted island?
Family and friends, plenty of food and drink, in particular chicken, and a really good DJ. It’s five ‘items’, but I can’t live without any of them.
